I Tried The ‘Skinny’ Pants…I Was Feeling Young!

Whatever possessed me to buy a pair of ‘skinny pants’? Make that two pair, last summer.

Skinny pants’ are the popular pants that fit evenly at the waist, slightly snug at the hips, and taper down the legs where the hem wraps narrowly around your ankle area. Not the skin tight, stretchy style, mind you, but still ‘skinny’. They can be seen on a variety of young men, everywhere ….. young, slim men.

They’re not seen on ‘old men’, anywhere ….. old and ‘filled out’ men. Define ‘old men’ as you please, but when you reach a stage in life when your hair is gone, your ears are long, your skin is saggy and your waist is baggy, you’re fittingly described as old, or older, and too ‘mature’ for skinny pants’.

Me, I exercise and eat a healthy diet. My weight is well managed. However, Mother Nature has won the body battle, albeit in a slow and deceiving, maybe even cruel, way. One day, you wake up and you’ve changed: the little roll around your waist is permanently problematic, it takes longer to get up and go, and you ache, even if you’ve done nothing, you ache.

Yet, here I was, browsing through the pant rack. And I saw them, khaki ‘skinny pants’ and I was feeling young. So, naturally, I felt even younger when the dressing room clerk complimented my selection and the cashier doubled down on it. Have you ever heard a sales clerk tell you otherwise?

I’m an easy mark for sales people, especially those who compliment me. I swiped the credit card, and walked out with a hop in my step.

Fast forward to today, a year later, a new summer. My life long critic (in a good way) finally found it in herself to bring me back to reality, “You know, those pants really aren’t meant for you”. As if I didn’t know. I knew a year ago, when I bought them. But I was feeling young.

Now, back to the drawing board for this summer’s fashion buys. Probably will be the old standby, blue jeans. One thing for certain, it won’t be the pants that hang halfway down your backside, unless of course, the sales clerk compliments me.

Incidentally, I haven’t discarded my ‘skinny pants’, yet. I’ve been doing a lot of yard work and my waist line seems to have shrunk ever so slightly, enough to make me look respectable. I’m thinking about keeping them, at least through the gardening season.

  1. Ahhh, haven’t we all taken that trip back to “The Fountain of Youth”, only to wake up to “REALITY’. No more skinny pants hanging in my closet! Good one.

  2. Loved this one so much I left a comment.  Am still smiling as to how silly we “mature” folks get at times. Have a wonderful 4th!Sent via the Samsung Galaxy S® 6, an AT&T 4G LTE smartphone

  3. The ‘mature woman’ has the same problem. Somehow those skinny pants aren’t the best for us. Wait, I bought one of those new tunic tops to hade the problem the pants created. Hubby looked at me and said, “Why did you buy a maternity top?” No kidding. Back to the old stand by. 🙂

    1. So funny! I’d be in deep poo-poo if I said that. We ‘mature’ folks should wear those pants that drop halfway down your butt just to show how silly they look. You first!😎

      1. The only reason Hubby wasn’t in deep doo-doo is because he really didn’t understand and truly thought it was a maternity top. Sigh! If everyone saw us wearing pants dropping down to show our underwear, it would quickly become a non fashion. 😀

  4. I say good for you. If they are comfortable and you like them, then why not. I have heard women ‘my age’ should not wear jeans. Well, I guess I am a rebel. I do have my limits and I do know how to hide what no one wants to see.

    1. Thanks, Maggie. I can hide the ‘roll’ (a small one) just by wearing must-shirt out. Maybe I’m being influenced by the kids at my crossing post too much. Soon, I’ll be wearing mismatched socks, shirts in winter and untied shoes 😂😂😂

      1. Oh, yes, the children are possibly an influence. My grandson wears shorts to school no matter the weather. He despises long pants. Not sure what he will do when someday he has a job. Maybe wear skinny pants.

  5. Maybe old man but fitted like a top model my friend. How do you think I could even think at buying a skinny pant who wouldn’t fit my big ass…. Think about with my 120 kg for 1m87 I am obliged rather to buy pants in the USA or in Germany.

    1. Okay, a little secret, I’m wasting away at 70.6 kg. And that little roll around my waist? If I want to get rid of it, I just pull up my pants a bit and, as the French say, Voilà!

  6. I can’t see why you can’t wear skinny pants, Steve. I’ll bet they look great. My mom is 81 and she wears exactly what she wants to and she looks amazing. I, of course, mainly were flowery pink dresses and pants and everyone always comments. One girl at work said she wouldn’t ever where flowery pants to work so I work a different pair each day for the whole week [grin!]

    1. I can’t believe someone would say that. And your response was funny. This was a fun story to write and the comments are great. You’re convincing me. I think I’ll keep them…at least for backyard work. Thanks, Robbie. 😂

  7. You are correct. this was a fun post to read including the comments. I think it is fine to see yourself in skinny jeans. As long as you don’t give up like some of us have. Keep working them. One day you will rock those skinny pants with pride and the rest of us will be envious. 😉 I need elastic in my waistline so you are my hero. 😉

    1. Writing is hard for me. I spend too much time on a story and when I’ve had enough, I tie it up and send it along. While I loved the theme, I didn’t think it was coming off well. Lo and behold, I got some of the best feedback in this one. I wore the pants to Home Depot tonight and my wife was aghast. Not me, I was comfy…😂😂😂

      1. I make it a point at my age to be a bit eccentric just for the fun of it. My daughter just thinks I’m “cute” Somehow I get away with playing with people and making them shake their heads. 🙂 I too, take too long on stories. You just never know what’s going to send of the avalanche. Just enjoy and we will too. 😉
