The Bar Night Chronicles: #30, ‘And The Survey Says…’

Five of the Bar Nighters ‘Zoomed in’, again, for an evening of general talk, laughs, useful tips, and, of course, beer. Yes, beer.

Our entire reason for gathering is ‘brotherhood’, but beer enhances it, and we can manage 1 for the night. The one among us who opted for Jack Daniels* Tennessee whiskey, America’s top selling whiskey, might believe he gets more enhancement with ‘JD’. No doubt, he does.

As usual, and most importantly, the night began with a toast: ‘Here’s to our group and…” (In Zoom, you need to raise your bottles high enough for the device’s camera to find it) “…to the good news that we’re all well and getting shots, Covid shots. Here’s to our friendship. Cheers!

And, the survey says, ‘what’s your favorite breakfast?’ Thought I’d open the ‘beer clutch’ with a probing question. And, since I asked, then it’s best to go first.

Oatmeal!

But not just plain oatmeal. ‘WOODSTOCK’ 5 Grain Cereal (it’s oatmeal) topped with raisins, crushed walnuts, sliced bananas and blueberries. WOW!

Flood it with milk and let it ‘stew’ in the refrigerator overnight for a morning concoction that makes your taste buds yell, ‘Hallelujah’ with the first spoonful. Who knew oatmeal tasted so good?

Apparently, just about everyone. Oatmeal was the favorite of three of us, cold or hot. Kashi cereal had a vote and one opted for tea and toast every morning. A nice, but dainty, ritual. Not surprisingly, it seems that we stick with our favorite on a daily basis. Creatures of habit or sensible eaters? Both, most likely.

Join the survey, what’s your favorite breakfast meal?

After my last ‘Chronicles’ posting, a few readers expressed a sentiment that the Bar Nights would be fun to join. We’d love to have you. And while our conversation isn’t titillating, at evenings end we’re emotionally satisfied. A social gathering is meant to be like that, isn’t it?

A ‘Zoom’ Bar Night is okay, but sitting alone in a sterile environment, our homes, isn’t the same as gathering together amid the sights, sounds and, yes, smells of a pub. I’ve alluded in earlier ‘Chronicles’.

However, upcoming Bar Nights may find us social distancing in a backyard, the next step up from Zooming. Under the stars would be great since we’re certain to discuss aliens/UFOs, one of our favorite topics, especially since we have an amateur ‘ufologist’ (yes, that’s a word) in our group. When he talks, the group is silent and attentive, like kids listening to a spooky story. It’s fun, now, as it was then.

Maybe, just maybe, a one in a million chance that we could have an alien join the circle of friendship. How would the ‘authorities’ report that in official government files?

Keep posted to the Bar Chronicles for upcoming information on UFO reports. And don’t forget the survey!

  1. I like starting my day with some type of omelet. There are certain foods I could eat everyday, and eggs falls into that category.

    1. I love eggs but doc told me to eliminate them because of high cholesterol (all under control now, and for years) but I use egg beaters. Just not the same. Scrambled eggs, bacon, toast and hot coffee, 2 cups. That would be so good right now. Thanks for participating, Pete.

      1. OMG! My doc would scold me if that was my breakfast 😂. But, the eggs, sausage and toast look delicious. There’s a restaurant in town, here, that is famous for their ‘garbage plate’. I’ll send a link you’d love it. 🤪

  2. Hi Steve, I am really pleased to see you posting about your friendship group again. I hope you do step up to a social distanced ‘yard’ experience soon. We don’t use that word ‘yard’ here, we say garden or back garden. I am glad you are a healthy bunch. My dad is overweight and a very bad eater. I’ve been telling him off for years. He has been unwell and was diagnosed with a mild enlarged heart this week. He has to go to a dietician. Hopefully, he listens to her. He’s had a massive outpouring of love and support from his four daughters so I think his resolution is fortified to lose weight and be healthier.

    1. Thank you, Robbie. But you forgot the survey. Your fav breakfast is _____? Tell your dad to listen to you. Also, serve him my oatmeal breakfast. A very healthy start to the day👍🏋️‍♂️

  3. My regular breakfast is really a two-parter so I swap days. The first is raisin bran crunch cereal with banana. The second is chopped apple, sliced banana, Greek yogurt, topped with raisin bran crunch cereal. On Sunday it is bacon, sausage, or ham with eggs fried, scrambled, or a cheese omelet. English muffin and side or hash browns. Just so you don’t have to explain your need to watch cholesterol, I am walking testimony to Big Pharma. Yes, medicated for cholesterol and High Blood pressure so I only do the egg and fat stuff on Sunday

  4. I would love to see your faces on Zoom if an alien did join in. If aliens are skilled enough to reach our remote planet I’m sure they could decipher the meeting code. I had porridge yesterday, but mostly I have tea and wholemeal toast.

    1. My mother had tea & toast every morning and lived to 92 yrs old. Porridge? Such a great word. Is that word used commonly where you live? As for seeing our faces, you’d only see my back end because I’d be running away so fast😂. Thanks for participating in this fun survey.

      1. Now you mention it, porridge is rather a fun word and I have taken it for granted all my life. A very common word in Britain and originating in Scotland I guess. I can still picture the box of Scots Porrige Oats in the kitchen when I was a child – there was a picture of a chap doing something athletic, kilt skirling. The advertisement on television for oats had a rousing bagpipe tune. Porrige is a plain godfearing dish for sure as evidenced by our most popular brand being called Quaker Oats. You can buy plenty of fancy microwave variations, but basic porridge is so easy to make in a saucepan- one cup of oats to 2 and a half cups of water or water and milk.

      2. And it’s even easier when you skip the stove top and just let it sit in the fridge overnight with all the toppings😊. QO is big here, too. No matter what you call it, it’s delicious. Just finished my big bowl before Goldilocks got to it😂. Thanks for participating in the survey.

  5. I have a thick slice of my homemade whole wheat bread with almond butter on top with a big mug of green tea. My husband loves gigantic breakfasts so he has the kitchen to himself after I fix my little meal.

    1. ‘Homemade’ sounds fabulous. And almond butter is the best. I’m going to have some in a bagel for lunch, shortly. Breakfast is my favorite meal. When can I join the husband unit😉? Thanks for contributing.

  6. It’s good to see the old gang and bar chronicles back here on your blog, Steve. Life friendships are a treasure. Zoom can’t do what in-person at the bar can do, but it’s a good thing. I look forward to your backyard Zoom. Oh yes, the survey…a banana followed by cereal and blueberries. Then I wash my vitamins down with orange juice. If I’m super hungry, a spoonful of peanut butter eaten right off the spoon. That was probably TMI on the survey!

    1. There’s never enough ‘TMI’. The more I know, the better because it helps me paint a great picture in my mind. Bananas and blueberries on cereal is the best. Sprinkle some crushed walnuts and raisins in it and, ‘Voila, crème de la crémé (hope my French is correct). I love peanut butter but a spoonful of almond butter is WOW! Thanks for participating, Jennie. (By the way, I posted a Crossing Guard story).

      1. Almond butter? I need to try that. And you’re right, there’s never enough TMI. I read your WONDERFUL Crossing Guard post. As always, you were asking questions and making children want to think, like a magician pulling a rabbit out of his hat. I commented on the post, and I’m chomping at the bit to reblog after I post my final Art Show post. Best to you, Steve.

    1. If it’s homemade, then it’s always good. And it’s a biscuit, all the better. As for the oatmeal, after doctoring it up with the fruit and nuts, it’s just ‘the cat’s meow’… thanks for participating.
