Love On The Sidewalk 💕…Story #3

This is the third story that I previously wrote about love. Appropriate to repost now as we approach Valentine’s Day. Enjoy!

It happened in a most awkward way, as love is wont to do. A thrown kiss, a wink, a wave and a look of expectation that it would be returned. But I would have none of it.

Alas, my misguided ego momentarily led me to believe that I was the target of the young gentleman’s affection, when, in actuality, I was caught in a crossfire, a crossfire of love, playing out on the sidewalk of my favorite coffee shop in the town center.

But it was over as quickly as it happened. The February breeze carried the romantic gesture past me to the attractive young woman at my back, the target of his affection. Her reply mirrored his, lovingly thrown back. I stepped aside and let it pass, unbroken.

Not a word was spoken between them but it was obvious by their flirtatious comportment, this was unabashed love, love on the sidewalk. And it was on display for anyone to see. I saw it because I’m an observer of people, especially those who blow kisses my way, albeit, inadvertently.

It’s winter in western New York and with that comes a string of cold temperatures and depressing cloudy skies. It can be overbearing. Today, however, the air was warmer, the sun was filling the sky and moods changed. Gaiety filled the air. And there was love, love on the sidewalk.

The humorist in me wanted to ask if the kisses were meant for me, but I bit my tongue and held back. Why spoil a good street performance with a silly annoyance.

Valentine’s Day is upon us. Love sightings will abound. Will you observe them?

Happy Valentine’s Day to lovers everywhere…

    1. But, of course, is there any other kind? Glad you liked it, Liz, and your comment says it all. Check out tomorrow evening’s post for a love that might be described as heartwarming, but most definitely, ‘warming’.

By the way, , I’m sure it’s been as cold there as it has here. Check out this very appropriate poem for these conditions. I memorized it a few years ago and it’s a favorite , a fun one to read aloud. Find ‘ The Cremation of Sam McGee’.

  1. I once was sitting next to a coworker at a teacher’s workshop. Her husband was one of the speakers that day, sitting in a chair in the front of the room, and we were off to the side. Before the workshop started, they began blowing kisses at each other. You bet, I looked away. 🤣

    1. So funny. Sometimes, I forget to mind my own business so I would have returned the blown kisses and maybe wink, too, just for a laugh. Your response was probably the right thing to do, the mature thing, something I lack. 😂

    1. This was fun to write because the episode was funny. I’m not sure the main characters saw it that way, or were even aware that I was there but I found it entertaining. Thanks so much for commenting. As for my disappearance, I left a comment on your other comment about weather. So good to ‘see’ you, again. (Steve)

  2. It is a good thing you stepped aside, Steve. An intercepted blown kiss could be considered rude. I had to laugh when you described the kiss thrown by the guy. As a senior I’ll take any blown kiss with the spirit intended. I have to admit though, none have come my way in a long time. A fun post.

    1. Thanks, John. I’ve had plenty of other signals ‘flipped’ my way, usually by NY drivers whom I cut off (Seniors have the right to do that), or is it who. But kisses, yeah, I’m with you, it’s been a looooonnnng time.

  3. I love this one! LOL!! We were at an airport and three air hostesses walked past us giggling. One of them said, “And he has a cute butt too.” My hubby said, “Why, thank you!” (he has that kind of humour)

    1. I’m glad that you saw the humor. It was funny as it happened, at least I thought it was. And the idea of a story popped into my head. Thanks for commenting and check out the ‘love’ stories from the two previous nights and there’ll be one more this evening. All in honor of Valentine’s Day. Welcome aboard!

      1. I think it’s becoming more popular. Already extremely popular in Canada. When I made sales calls in Canada, it was not uncommon to see curling clubs in small towns or have clients who were on recreational teams much like we Americans have bowling nights.
